What You'll See:
In this video, you’ll see how Chris uses Lost Calf Mews (a/k/a Lost Calf Calls) as the primary vocalization to call in a bull. While the scenario started out as most of them do, with Chris initiating contact with Lost Mews and Contact Bugles, once he realized the primary bull wasn’t responding favorably to his Assembly Mews, and his typical “Targeted Strategy” calling efforts, he switched gears, switched vocalizations, and was able to turn the encounter around. Along with the Lost Calf Mews, Chris also (inadvertently) employed the tried-and-true “fade-away” technique of calling and walking away, that may have also helped pull the bull into his set-up. This sequence is a great example of how you can use the types of Lost Calf Mews/calls you hear in the The Gallery “Pool Party” video, in a hunting scenario.
Setting the Stage:
Although it was late in September, this particular year, the bulls in this unit were incredibly tight-lipped, and, for the most part, the action was abnormally slow. On this particular morning, it was an incredibly windy, and the elk were, as usual, a little hard to pin down at day-break; they were fairly quiet and all of them were a long distance off. By mid-morning, Chris finally worked his way into an area where he had heard some bugles just a few moments before, and set-out to make initial vocal contact like he always does; not knowing if either of the bulls had cows, he assumed that by this late in September, at least one of them did, so he planned on starting with a Targeted calling strategy, and see how it went.
Viewing / Listening Tips:
Headphones/ear-buds will definitely help you to hear the faint bugles of the second bull in the sequence, but they aren’t absolutely necessary – your normal speakers should be just fine for this video.
