In this series, Chris will cover the basic - as well as some very specific - behavioral traits and responses elk exhibit when they're interacting with each other, their habitats, and with us when we're in the field, and how those behavioral characteristics should influence your hunting and calling strategies.
The first behavioral principle covered is the "See You First" principle. In this video, Chris will briefly go over how elk communicate, the components of "See You First", and not only how those components affect elk behavior, but how they should influence you and your hunting efforts.
In conjunction with the “See You First” principle, one of the most critical behavioral principles to understand is what Chris calls “The Doorway” principle. While it’s not that complex, “The Doorway” principle is arguably the single-most influential factor affecting your success each year; you can be the best caller in the world, but if you don’t understand – and account for – “The Doorway” when choosing your set-ups, you’ll never be as successful at actually putting elk on the ground as you could be. In this video, Chris will start his discussion of The Doorway with an example of the principle from a human standpoint – how people actually employ this principle every day – then go into the principle from an elk’s point of view. Finally, Chris will discuss how to use that knowledge and understanding to maximize your success in the field.
